Response to Costanza Allevato’s question, “what happens at Dufferin Grove Park?” – intermittent census of activities on Sunday May 16, 10 and 11 am, 12 noon, 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10 pm :

10 am: 97 people

  • 32 in clubhouse for clothing swap, 2 volunteers
  • 6 little kids playing ball hockey
  • 2 staff setting up snack bar
  • 2 Norwegians setting up Constitution Day event
  • 3 mothers and 4 kids on grass by children's garden
  • 7 people sitting on park benches
  • 31 in playground
  • 7 in sandpit
  • 7 strolling around

11 am: 168 people

  • 1 staff lighting pizza day fire
  • 8 Norwegians setting up Viking area (small odd-shaped canvas tent)
  • 51 in clubhouse at clothing swap
  • 5 outside clubhouse front door talking
  • 23 in sandpit
  • 43 in playground
  • 18 in snack bar area
  • 19 strolling around

12 noon: 259 people

  • 9 people by field house -- Clay and Paper Theatre musicians, practising *national anthem for Norwegian parade
  • 5 people plus 1 dog playing frisbee in soccer field
  • 2 basketball players
  • 10 people setting up birthday party near oven
  • 10 people in clubhouse at clothing swap
  • 2 skateboarders on rink pad
  • 2 sitting in main campfire circle
  • 2 sitting on bio-toilet bench
  • 6 people at Filipino picnic area near Dufferin St
  • 4 practising double-dutch (skipping) by cob couch circle
  • 27 in sandpit

  • 10 setting up in circus area (ie. west of main fire circle -- they contact each other through Facebook message)
  • 7 people sitting on bio-toilet bench
  • 129 Norwegians, listening to royal proclamation from Oslo being read out, and singing
  • Norwegian and Canadian national anthem
  • 7 at birthday picnic near cob courtyard
  • 19 in snack bar area
  • 45 in playground
  • 13 in sandpit
  • 5 picnicking north of playground
  • 5 picnicking NW of playground
  • 30-ish people strolling around

3 pm: 297 people

  • 8 people sunbathing near soccer field
  • 5 playing touch football in north soccer field
  • 4 playing frisbee west of tree nursery
  • 14 playing basketball on court, 2 more using the rink pad basketball hoops
  • 10 setting up BBQ beside bake oven (families of basketball players)
  • 3 sitting at fire circle
  • 8 having picnic beside tree nursery
  • 5 playing tetherball
  • 23 people in circus group (all in little sub-groups, some just sitting *watching, some upside-
  • down using silks)
  • 5 people sitting at cob couch circle
  • 31 in cob courtyard/snack bar area, eating or playing board games
  • 11 lined up for food at cob cafe (2 staff, one runner)
  • 12 using wading pool surface to play, ride bikes

  • 13 picnicking and lying in the grass near tree nursery
  • 5 sitting at fire circle (no campfire)
  • 6 practising hula hoop in circus area
  • 7 picnicking at Filipino area near Dufferin
  • 19 having various picnics beside playground
  • 5 packing up a birthday party near playground
  • 10 in cob courtyard area
  • 4 using wading pool surface to play soccer
  • 40 in playground
  • 15 at sandpit
  • 26 strolling

8 pm: 85 people

  • 2 people plus 2 dogs on soccer field
  • 7 playing soccer on rink
  • 12 on basketball court (just after an argument when they told some other guys to leave. One basketball player said they were "kids", i.e. 18 - 21 years old "who think they're so big now, they think they can just talk bad to everybody, one of them hit a younger guy, so we told them to leave, and they left.")
  • 18 at the BBQ beside the bake oven (basketball families) including one guy who just got out of jail a week ago, was in Penetang superjail for two years. Known to us, a mixed-up guy who needs support and watching.
  • 3 playing tetherball
  • 2 people plus a dog at the cob couch circle
  • 1 homeless man on a bench near Dufferin Street
  • 15 at playground
  • 5 at sandpit
  • 4 skateboarders
  • 12 people strolling

10 pm: 25 people

  • 3 people talking by the storage shed
  • 8 playing basketball
  • 8 at BBQ (basketball families)
  • 2 dog walkers on soccer field
  • 2 women using the rink house washrooms, then I locked up (field house *washrooms are still closed for the season).
  • 2 people strolling
