A letter from Maysann
Hello! This year the Friends of Dufferin Grove Park, Jonathan (from the skating program last year), Erinne Henry and I are going to be starting up our own "learn to skate" sessions at the rink.
In case you are wondering who I am, my name is Mayssan Shuja. I've been skating for almost 15 years and have been teaching skating for about seven. I came to Canada eight years ago from Oman, a beautiful place with the most fantastic sunny, warm weather all year round...and one ice rink! As it turned out, the rink was across from where I lived. So, my parents quickly decided I was to become a figure skater. Since coming here, I've moved from Mississauga, to Peterborough (Trent University), and finally wound up in Toronto. I moved to this neighborhood a year ago, initially to escape the cockroaches of Kensington Market! Now, I am so happy to discover how exciting this part of the city is. The communities, the events, and of course, Dufferin Rink, all minutes away from my home, are such a big bonus.
And now, about the classes...
The focus of the sessions is primarily to make you and your kids comfortable on the ice. We will teach at the pre-beginner, beginner and intermediate skill levels which include walking - stopping - gliding - backwards skating - crossovers, and, of course, how to fall gracefully!!
The skating sessions will last 45 minutes and will consist of three 15 minute segments: warm up, instructional, and practice and games
These sessions are open to boys, girls and adults interested in learning basic skating skills. Such basic skills can be the beginning of a hobby, or a career in hockey or figure skating.
I look forward to meeting all the potential skaters out there. Don't forget to pull out those skates, get them sharpened and make sure they still fit!
This is going to be a exciting winter!!! See you all soon!
