Council Notebook

Here are a few highlights from recent council and committee meetings where Adam is working.

Bike Paths
Toronto's Bicycle Paths

At a February Works Committee meeting, Adam moved to have Transportation Services establish a dedicated staff person to building bike lanes. This is an important step towards building the city's bike network. The Toronto Bike Plan has several proposed paths in Ward 18, as well as the Railpath initiative in the Parks Department, but there is, as of yet, no cycling infrastructure in Ward 18.

The strategic plan for building bike paths will require $2.4 million this year to stay on track, but only $1 million had been proposed for this year's budget. Adam and Councillor De Baeremaeker were able to locate $800,000 from a cancelled project to keep our project on the right path.

Waste Reduction
During a garbage strikeIn January, Councillor Adam Giambrone asked the Ontario government to help

Toronto fight its garbage problem by instituting a depost/return program for the LCBO. Council passed a motion that requests that the province allow Ontario municipalities to require a deposit/return system for all glass containers. Adam further called upon the Ontario Government to immediately institute such a program for the LCBO.

Glass garbage

The overwhelming majority of coloured glass comes from wine and liquor bottles, sold predominantly by the LCBO. While most people take care to recycle these bottles, much of this glass is not actually recycled. The problem is that our collection system mixes and breaks the glass. Over 26% of glass containers sold by the LCBO go into the blue box, but end up in the landfill.

Toronto Recylcing

What is now waste could be a resource. The city is paying between $29.50 and $32 a tonne to have mixed broken glass removed while clear glass can be sold for $34 a tonne. The city spends $1.3 million to collect, process and dispose of these bottles. City Staff estimate that a deposit/return program for the LCBO could net savings of $550,000 a year. The LCBO is the largest retailer of liquor in the world, putting it in a unique position to lead on waste reduction.
