Dan Yashinsky is a friend of Jane Jacobs and also a friend of our park. When we built our second oven, he came to tell a story, and to be part of the celebration. He just sent us this email inviting people to visit www.storytellingtoronto.org to find out about the upcoming 2004 Toronto Festival of Storytelling. The Annex (Jane's neighbourhood) is becoming a storytelling village from March 26 - April 4. Jane Jacobs herself seems to like stories a lot -- when we gave her a copy of our "Cooking with fire in Public Space" booklet, she read it from cover to cover. Putting the storytelling festival in her neighborhood seems very fitting. Here's the email:

The Stone Soup Concert, serving up SCARLETT, WASHINGTON & WHITELEY, TABBY JOHNSON, JENNY WHITELEY, THE BROTHERS COSMOLINE and SAX FAMILY ROBINSON Isabel Bader Theatre, Saturday, May 8, 7:30 pm.

The 5th Annual Stone Soup Concert for the Alan Howard Waldorf School's downtown Toronto campus simmers to a boil on Saturday, May 8, 2004 from 7:30 - 11:00 PM at the Isabel Bader Theatre, Victoria University, 93 Charles St. West (Museum subway) on the campus of the University of Toronto.

Bucky Berger, event producer and a well-known Toronto musician has been a Waldorf enthusiast ever since his daughter joined the growing 17 year-old downtown Madison Avenue School 6 years ago. "Michael Rose is thriving at the school," says Berger, "but private school is costly and like most independent schools in Ontario we're not funded by the public. The concert has become a good opportunity to raise awareness of and funds for Waldorf education as well as a great reason to bring together some fabulous artists, as this year's line up will attest."

The trio of Jackie Washington, Ken Whiteley and Mose Scarlett headlines a show featuring Jenny Whiteley, Tabby Johnson, Sax Family Robinson and The Brothers Cosmoline hosted by Rick Roberts (An American in Canada) and Gregory Hoskins. General Admission tickets at $25.00 (including taxes) are available at The Alan Howard Waldorf School, 250 Madison Avenue, by calling 416 963-5068, on line at www.ahws.org or email at stonesoup@sympatico.ca.

Jumblies Theatre: Once a Shoreline, May 21 - May 30

Jumblies Theatre is pleased to announce a spectacular theatre event, Once A Shoreline which takes us to the shores of a prehistoric lake that, twelve thousand years ago, extended as far north as the hill of Davenport Road. Within the framework of this vanished lake three overlapping tales of courage and magic unfold in visual imagery, poetry and text. Read the brochure >>

A letter from Ruth Howard, Artistic Director, Jumblies Theatre:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We are very excited to be in the final weeks of production on Once A Shoreline , an extravagant theatre event by Jumblies Theatre with the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre.

The Sanctuary performance space has been transformed to create a sense of location that takes us to the shores of a prehistoric lake that, twelve thousand years ago extended as far north as the hill of Davenport Road. Within the framework of this vanished lake three overlapping tales of courage and magic unfold in music, visual imagery, movement and poetry.

The piece, like the ebb and flow of tides on the changed shoreline, envelopes the audience - interweaving dance, puppetry, singing, pageantry and circus arts. Original music and soundscape by composer Wende Bartley, and the participation of three choirs, live musicians and over one hundred community members combine to make this a truly spectacular theatre event.

The play is designed for a standing audience – the action takes place through and around the audience and it is most fun to experience it like this. It is about 1 and a half hours long with an intermission past the half-way point. There are a small number of seats for seniors/ those who really can't be standing, so if you need these please specify when you order tickets.

Also, the show is driven by an ongoing musical score – it is a bit like an opera. It requires quiet and focus, and is, therefore, not suitable for very young children or those who wouldn't be able to pay attention quietly for that amount of time.

The show is written and designed by Ruth Howard, directed by Varrick Grimes with musical director Erna Van Daele, performers Mara Shaughnessy and Noah Kenneally, choreographers Tanya Williams and Antonio Ramirez, singers Kate Van Doorne and Jen Carter, musicians Kevin Barrett, Erin Donovan, and Jonathan Craig, VIVA! Youth Singers, the Alpha Alternative Choir and the Davenport Perth Community Choir, and the design/ technical assistance of Chris Clifford, Angela Thomas, Kit Currie, Marianne Alas, Mary Ford and many others.

Please come and join us!

Our staff person Liz Rucker is in this one.

Once A Shoreline Opening May 21 runs to May 30. Preview May 19.

Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre, 1900 Davenport Rd (west of Lansdowne). Parking available at Pope Paul VI School 270 Laughton St (south of St Clair).

Since our first concerts, given in the towns along the Madawaska River, we have been fascinated by the many extraordinary, and sometimes unlikely, connections between the music of different eras and different countries. The exploration of these innumerable cultural explorations has become the basis of our programming, giving us the threads to combine the old with the new, and the familiar with the less well known. Our aim is to bring highly diverse repertoire to as broad an audience as possible, and it has been inspiring to find our audiences enthusiastically embracing new challenges with us.

Samba at 90 Croatia Street

posted September 5, 2004
Performance, Friday Sept 17, 7pm

A few summers ago, Alan Hetherington and his samba band rehearsed every Sunday afternoon in the park near Dufferin Street. Lots of people watched and enjoyed themselves but eventually it got to noisy for the neighbourhood, and we had to ask them to stop. Now that the Royal Conservatory of Music is moving into our neighbourhood (into the former Ursula Franklin High School building, Brockton High School before that, located across from the north end of the Dufferin Mall), Alan and his samba group are back, but playing inside the conservatory. Just a block from the park! On Friday Sept.17, 7 p.m., three samba groups will have a performance of Brazilian music, dance and pageantry, in honour of Brazilian Independence Day, at 7p.m. (tickets $10 at the door). The groups are Escola de Samba de Toronto, Brazil Nativa Dancers, and Axe Capoeira. The feature presentation will be a film, WE ARE SAMBA about the group, The Escola de Samba, their travels and links within Brazil. Following the 70 min film will be a live performance of samba drumming and dancing, with everyone on the stage.

A good thing to go to after Friday night supper, which will feature a Brazilian menu that night.

Regular Sunday Events, from September 19, 2004

Then every Sunday afternoon from September 19, at 3 pm., you can go over to 90 Croatia Street and learn Samba percussion and dance (bring the kids):

  • 1:00-2:30 Iniciantes (beginner music lesson, Pay what you can drop-in workshop)
  • 2:30-3:30 Aula de Samba (Samba dance lesson, Pay what you can drop-in workshop)
  • 3:00-5:30 Ensiaro da Bateria (Bateria rehearsal, Open to the public for inspiration/entertainment, participated in by regular members of Escola de Samba de Toronto)

Alan says they're really looking forward to returning to the community after a few years "in exile." Good!

Showing together for the first time in Toronto, Robert Linsley and Mike Murphy will exhibit paintings and objects relating to their dialogue of the past two years. Their work is informed by current scientific thought and by a reinvestigation of some important thinking about painting of the late sixties and early seventies. Together they propose a reinvention of the terms and practices of modernism.

Linsley's paintings analyze the nature of the picture plane. He tests the amount of information that a plane can carry concerning the position and motion of objects in space.

Murphy's objects all circle around an attempt to partially restrict the tools of analysis. His pieces examine the plausibility of the removal of totalizing reference. What this might be replaced with is uncertain, but Murphy believes his imagination can allow for hybridized associations.

When old Copernicus asked the perceiver to revolve instead of the heavens themselves, we lost our way for a while in a dizzying swirl. Quickly, new ways of regarding the state of things arose. It's not so much that things got back to normal, but rather that the same world just got a bit more complex. It turns out that small distinctions matter after all.

Robert Linsley lives and works in Kitchener, Ontario, and Mike Murphy lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.

Hello all,

This is an invitation to see my new show called "Our Time". I'll be performing it with Noah at the Red Festival this Sunday October 24 at 8:30pm.

The Red Festival is a 4 day event running from the 24th to the 27th at Lula Lounge. It's has many great acts including singing, dancing, and clowning. It's well worth seeing all of it, but if you're especially interested in puppetry, "Our Time" is on Sunday and then Noah is performing his own show on Wednesday along with another group doing shadow puppetry.

"Our Time" will be performed in the Yellow Room which has a very limited seating capacity of approx. 40 so come early, enjoy the other acts and then scoot into the Yellow Room to see my show.

For more info go to www.girlcancreate.com.

Special thanks go to David Anderson for his continuing support and to David and Ann Powell who's work was the inspiration for this show.

Hope to see you there!

Laura Repo and the Blue Healers

Laura Repo, a singer/songwriter friend of the park tells us that she and her band, the Blue Healers, will be playing at the Gladstone Hotel, at their CD release on Wednesday November 24. Laura writes:

"starting to get the hang of things/like how to put a new battery in my guitar they run out after a year or so/like remembering how the songs go, kinda and what the band looks like/and how to leave the house and call a babysitter but i'll sing sami a lullabye/from the stage of the gladstone hotel"

Laura is planning an open air concert featuring women's bands at Dufferin Grove park when the weather warms up, in late spring. It will be in the daytime so the park kids, including the new crop like Sami, can run and dance around. Wonderful. But in the meantime, park friends can listen to Laura's truly fine band at the Gladstone Hotel: Wednesday November 24 at 8 p.m.: $10. There will be other musicians too: Chris Coole, Erynn Marshall, and Joanne Mackell with her band the Paradise Rangers. And lots of other friends of the park, no doubt.

Now she and illustrator Jennifer Herbert have put out a book. Sounds like a wonderful Christmas present. We'll try to have some of these books available at the market, in December.

Hi ! I'd love to invite you to my first book launch. It's for a wonderful rhyme book for young children. Theo Heras is the author and I did the illustrations.

Please come out and celebrate with us, the info. is below.... Books will be for sale and signed at the event and if you can't make the launch, the books will be available at Indigo bookstores.

I look forward to seeing you all!

The RCM Community School offers the second in it's 2004/2005 World Music concert series with: autorickshaw
Featuring Suba Sankaran, Ed Hanley, Rich Brown and Debashis Sinha.

Saturday, November 27, 2004 at 8:00 p.m.
The RCM Concert Hall at 90 Croatia Street

Autorickshaw integrates south Asian tradition with jazz and other popular music forms to create funky, contemporary arrangements of south Indian classical compositions, Bollywood-tinged jazz standards, and fiery Indo-jazz originals.
