New sand was added to the sandpit at the end of May -- one pile in the sandpit (good) and one pile at the bottom of the park, right next to the laneway sewer, and against the advice of park users.
The obvious thing happened -- kids took the shovels and started the excavate next to the sewer. The water (from the tap but also from the copious rainfalls we've had this spring) began to wash large amounts of sand into the sewer. Not a good idea!
To make it worse, the lock on the sandpit water regulator has been broken for several weeks and so anyone can get in there and turn the tap on full blast. That was never meant to be -- a waste of water, and the pressure drives the sand into the sewer more forcefully. The tap works best at half-volume -- see last summer's newsletter item here. Staff have reported the broken lock but so far, no action from Tech services to weld it.
On July 8, 2016, general supervisor Peter While sent this email, saying that the shredded wading pool surfacing would be removed in 2017. The surfacing is a mess, and it's one week before the wading pool is supposed to open. Peter White is now the citywide Parks manager. A cliffhanger -- will his crew be able to get it done?
