Daycare

Recommendation

posted September 18, 2012

From: Brenda Kamino

When my son was little, Network Daycare, on the corner of Ossington and Bloor had home care providers. I took my two year old (until he went to school) to a home where a lovely woman, with three sons of her own over 12, took care of three children full time and two sisters of one of the children before and after school. I provided my son's lunch - once a week she would cook the healthiest lunch for everyone (everyone loved it) and the centre provided portable beds for naps, toys and other equipment. It was ideal.

Others like the socialization that kids get in a daycare centre. If I hadn't been so protective, I might have gone that route. It was tough for him to be comfortable with big groups in kindergarten and I had to cope with separation anxiety twice instead of once.

I don't know if Network still offers this, but I think they do. It's a little pricier than regular daycare.

Knife Sharpeners

Recommendation

posted December 3, 2007

Degrees Kitchen Store on Yonge Street has a sharpening service. You have to leave your knives but they are very sharp when you get them back (about a week). Randy who owns the shop is very knowledgeable about all kitchen equipment.

There is a wonderful little kit for 'global' knives which works well between professional sharpening. I wouldn't use it on any blades other than 'global brand'.

Do not let the guy with the bell anywhere near a knife you have paid serious money for....they are known for ruining the bevel.

Happy chopping....

I once had all my knives sharpened by a real craftsman, Howard Zephyr. I don't know if he's still doing that, but he was an artisan who knew a lot about the filaments and was real keen on getting everything just right. He explained the difference between a really good knife and having the shank go through the handle and what to look for. It was a whole education.

For him, it was most important to have knives cared for properly. I must say, that it sure made cooking with my beautiful knives into an entirely different experience.

I am trying to remember the card, it was Howard's Custom Honing or something.

I can ask a mutual friend how to reach him if there is interest. I am sure he still lives in the area but I think he does other work now.

CAUTION

posted December 3, 2007

Got to disagree with this one. I have a very expensive knife that was pretty much ruined by that guy. Big chunks in the blade now. He proceeded to tell me how it wasn't a very good knife - that he knows what a good one looks like - after he finished it off. I was foolish to let him do it, and I'd certainly recommend NOT letting him near it if it's at all precious to you.

I think the best thing is to buy a sharpening stone from Lee Valley and do it yourself- if you have the time and patience.

CAUTION

posted December 3, 2007

Beware the man with the bell---he ruined a whole set of Henkels before I could stop him, albeit 10 years ago so it may be a different guy by now. I think that truck is more about lawnmower blades than cooking implements.

Recommendation

posted December 3, 2007

For what it's worth, I brought a knife to the fellow that occasionally drives by the house ringing his bell. I was happy with the result. It was certainly dangerously sharp, plus he ground down a chipped tip and reshaped the blade a bit. Knife purists may disagree, I'm sure!

The problem of course is that this would be come-by-chance. Consider giving it a go if you hear the bell, though.

Do you have a steel for day-to-day honing? It really does make a difference.

Hi neighbors - i've worked in the telecommunications industry for a while, and my experience has been, when the provider can't/won'/t proves incompetent to be able to resolve it's own issues, call the CRTC - here's a link

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/T12.htm

Recording dates, times, methods (ie, phone, email, letter) and names of people you communicated with at your provider, and exactly what you were told for each of your transactions, proves very helpful in demonstrating the legitimacy of your case. It'll also highlight the inaccurate and often contradictory information you're being given. Then the CRTC will take over and do all the contacting of the provider on your behalf, and the provider will apologize.

Not always a perfect solution, but once the CRTC gets moving the provider jumps into action.hope this help

Rogers Audit?

On Tuesday January 16, Michelle Webb posted an email to the 'Friends of Dufferin Grove' listserve concerning a strange encounter with a man in her back yard. Her account prompted some other stories and comments about Rogers' questionable business practices.

Hi all,

I had an interesting encounter today and wanted to send a quick e-mail about it.

This afternoon I was sitting in my kitchen when I saw a man in my back yard. He came into the alcove on the furthest side of the yard from the gate, rummaged around moving some bicycles, and then turned to leave. I stopped him as he came past the front door and asked him what he was doing. He stated he was from Roger’s Cable (he was wearing a Roger’s hat and badge) and said Roger’s is doing ‘audits’ in the area.

I informed him that I was uncomfortable and upset at him entering my backyard without ringing my doorbell especially since we have not used Roger’s products at this house since we moved in 3 ½ years ago.

My brother is in town and he called Roger’s as it disturbed him as well. I thought it was important to verify that the person was indeed a Roger’s employee to make a formal complaint about him entering my backyard without my permission. Also, if I discovered that Roger’s had no employees in the area I wanted to inform the list-serve of the occurrence in case it was related to petty crime.

I am deeply troubled because Roger’s was unable to verify if this man was a Roger’s employee or not (they said they would get back to me in the next 24 hours). They were not ‘able’ to offer me any phone number in which to follow up on the issue, and because I have no accounts at Roger’s they were unable to make note of my call. Also, the customer service person I spoke to said that “Roger’s employees ‘have’ to be able to do investigations and audits if an area has ‘leakages.’!!!???!!!

I now believe that this WAS a Roger’s employee in my back yard, without my permission. I am upset because it seems by making a choice not to have cable television has somehow opened me up to having strangers enter my backyard to investigate that choice, implying that it is so suspect to not to have cable that I must be stealing it.

By writing this e-mail I am hoping to inform others of the occurrence and also seeking advice on who to approach with complaints about this issue. As I am clearly and proudly not a cable customer, I am guessing any complaints I make will not be heard or taken seriously by Rogers.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Michelle Webb

His fees were quite reasonable and in line with the Ontario Vet Association's fee guidelines. He brings everything with him for routine exams though for surgery he uses an office.

There us a new stroller cleaning and repair company in Toronto that does free pick up and delivery within the neighborhood. We recently had them completely overhaul our stroller used a few years ago in time for our new baby and they did a fantastic job, cannot recommend them enough!

Stroller Spa is a cleaning, repair, rental, and storage service for strollers and car seats. The cleaning part focuses on your entire stroller or car seat utilizing a thorough routine of cleansing, sanitizing, checking, and shining using only the finest eco-friendly, biodegradable, and baby safe products.

We also offer repair services! Stroller Spa has inside connections with the industry's leading manufacturers so we're able to procure hard-to-find replacement parts that big-box retailers just don't carry. That means that strollers not only look new when they come back, but they run like it too! (Just FYI, we are the official repair service for Bugaboo in Toronto)

Why use our service?

1 – Getting ready for baby #2? Consider sprucing up your stroller and cleaning that infant car seat that has been hanging out in storage!

2 – Selling your stroller? Get back more money with a completely cleaned and repaired stroller. Our deep cleaning, green processes can return almost any stroller to nearly new condition.

3 – Received a hand me down or purchased a used stroller? Let us sanitize and spiff up your new-to-you ride.

4 - FREE pick-up and delivery within the Dufferin Grove community.

I called and took my seven year old Lenovo desktop down to see Jay. He was the third computer support person to look at it, and the first to correctly diagnose why my screen jiggled and system crashed.

The first two checked & updated the video card driver plus some tune-ups , however the problem was the PCI card itself, which Jay said was problematic. He managed to make the display run off an Intel chip (well enough for movies, but not at game-speeds, which I don't play) and downloaded driver & changed settings for that, & added a fan to cool the CPU & inspected motherboard for damaged capacitors. He did all this in just over an hour for a small fraction of what the previous support people asked for. Be sure to pay him what he's worth, not what he asks.

If you go to the applestore and you have Procare,($100 per year) they never keep your computer for more than 48 hrs, which can be significant.

They will come to you, if you need them to. VERY knowledgeable. Prices on par with others.

Carbon Computing. 772 Queen Street East. 416-535-1999 www.carbonation.com

Carbon has the greatest number of bench techs with decades of experience dedicated to the Apple platform not only in Toronto, but in Ontario.

Ric Amis is very talented, but he is not a hardware repair person. MacDoc is not an authorized Apple dealer nor an authorized Apple repair technician.

Carbon will give you a fair description of the problem and the cost of repair as well as the cost of replacing or upgrading the machine if this is your best path. They can often even offer you trade in value for your machine as a used computer or even as parts towards another machine. All of their parts are Apple certified or third party that meet or exceed the expectations of the original part (for example memory or hard drives). Important: Carbon also participates in proper green recycling of dead parts and equipment avoiding dumping heavy metals into our garbage dumps.

The Apple store, limited in their repair space, often send clients here and Carbon is Apple Canada's regional on site repair clinic for AppleCare (Apple's warranty program)

Anyone at the front desk will do or ask for Julio, head of repair.

Full disclosure, this is our family business which we started in the basement of our house on Havelock Street!

It's the war of the mac computer repair companies! It's great to have so many options. I need to add more info to my previously rushed post...

I've never used Mactweek, although I think I did meet him, if this is the same person, during a Self-employment Assistance program that I did (he is a grad and came to speak there). I like that he comes to your home, and I'm curious about his skill.

I've used Carbon, bought stuff there and had stuff repaired there, and would go not hesitate to go there again if I should need their help. I found the service adequate, but not exceptional. Now that I know it is owned by people in the neighbourhood, I will give them extra consideration.

The reason I recommend Mac Doc, is that they have gone far beyond what is required of them many times for me. I've both bought computers from them, and had them fixed. David, the owner, is not the most 'personable' happy person I've ever met (this would be the only reason I would take my computer anywhere else), but despite that he has done stuff like rush over to my house to fix a problem at 11pm on a long-weekend Saturday. The other people he's got working for him are also good (and some, much happier). I've NEVER had them fix a problem without leaving me with some very useful piece of advice. These are the people I call when I'm buying a new machine because they live and breathe mac computers.

Is that a glowing enough referral or what?

Just saw Anne's email. I have gone to Eused for ink and chatted with him. He seems like a very nice person and I'd like to support his business more. The thing is though... my computer is my work, so I don't like to take chances. I may have to try him out on the 'family' machine, if there ever comes a time.

The last time I used to get my Mac fix was at the MAC Store, very friendly and efficient, they were great.

However I have been using MAC's since the late 80's. I met RIC from MacTweek in the late 90's?. He used to be involved with Interaccess an artist centre that explored technology and software putting an artistic bent to it. Also he was a software tester with many of the programs for MAC. I used him personnally first with my own freelance biz, then professionally to maintain a Design company's network, backup system and individual computers. He is very personable and he did at the time have people who worked for him.

The only place I don't like is the repair people at the Computer System Centre at College and Spadina, I have had issues with their service.

David Sharp comes to the house and he is a wizard with messed up computers .... I think his prices are beyond reasonable but that may be because he has been able to retrieve information I thought was gone forever and that I had NOT backed up to a key or disc. So I cannot recommend anyone better.

I second David Sharp. He has provided computer repair and complicated set-up for us several times in the past couple of years. He has always found a solution to any problems we were experiencing and his prices are totally reasonable. He's also a pleasure to work with. Telephone: (416) 531-2753

I have a friend who does that kind of work. Most of his business is through word-of-mouth and recommendations from people who have been very happy with his work.

I've tried E Used on Bloor across from the old theatre. He is reasonable and seems to be able to fix most problems.

David Sharp has helped me with various computer issues over the past year. I was referred to him from the Dufferin Grove site. His telephone #416.570.2753. He lives in the area and does house calls.

As recently as last week he recovered a pile of data from a laptop which was virtually dead....his rates are very reasonable.

I'd suggest Paws in the City on College Street. I imagine since she's so small they'll keep her in the front area, away from the big dogs in the back.

There's a dog owner/writer in the neighbourhood who just started dog walking. Since he's just starting he's probably quite flexible and might be your best bet. His name is Tony and you can reach him at 416-516-2101.

These are the serious dogwalkers, and I recommend both of them highly. Both of them have boarded Sunny in their homes.
