Hello Market Friends:
It's time to empty your freezer of the last popsicles and mystery leftovers, and fill it up again with some of the season's best, to remind you of summer when it is far away. There are a lot of fine cooks around the market these days, and the tables piled with beautiful produce get good conversations going about all the ways to preserve summer flavours. Here's the vendors' news:
From Greenfields:
"The nice rain we have been lucky to get is moistening the soil well and helping the sweet Carrots to size up. Lots of bunches this week! Also, there are plenty of Golden and Red Beets in bulk- still small to medium size. A fresh new patch of Curly Kale is finally ready for harvest- soon we will have purple as well. The 'Fall' Collard season begins too. The herbs are doing very well- Dill, Cilantro and Parsley. Beautiful Red and Green Leaf Lettuce, as well as sweet Purple Scallions, Red Mediterranean Onions, huge Globe Eggplants and Green Peppers. Our delicious fresh Garlic is almost all gone, so stock up this week if you don't have much squirreled away. "Torpedo" Cabbages are flourishing with the bit of cooler weather, and are ready to be chopped up into sweet 'slaw. Check for a few other local treats!" Monika
From the Sosnickis:
"This week, a lot of the same great harvest. Make sure to order romas; we'll have lots of great heirlooms, cherry, big beefsteak reds, potatoes, sweet onions, beautiful beets, and lots of PEPPERS!! Green bells, hot bananas!! LOTS of reds soon! A look ahead: coming soon will be fresh cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, beans, cabbage, carrots - some neat different coloured kinds plus trusted sweet orange, SWEET CORN, spinach and salad mix, Chard, kale to boot! Let's say that September is going to be our most plentiful month of the entire year!" Jess & Ben
From Jonathan Forbes:
"I'll have some fresh wild strawberry preserves plus organic maple syrup in various sizes. I'll also have this years freshly dried pure wild catnip. Perfect gift for deprived or lazy felines!"
A reminder that Berettas will be away this week.
The heavy winds this week split one of our market's shading trees, and it had to come down. It's sad every time a big city tree goes, and a reminder of how precious the young ones are for the future. Thanks to all the tree-waterers out there! After so much dry weather, maybe some relief is in sight. We're hoping to see lots of smiling faces under umbrellas. See you at the market!
