Hello Market Friends:
Rain, heat...it's boom time! Everything's growing like mad, but several of the farmers found time to write:
From Jessie and Ben Sosnicki:
"Ben and I will have an abundance from our fields: lots of Zucchini, Peas, Broccoli, red leaf lettuce, salad mix, red bunching onions and a small amount of field cucumbers and TOMATOES!! (Patches are just beginning...Striped Germans. Brandywines, Romas, and more coming soon.) Next week our green beans will be ready and by the end of the month our carrots and beets! It has been a lot of work controlling the weeds this year, but it is well worth it, as the harvest should be amazing. Sweet corn and potatoes available in August."
Jessie sent along some great photos of the green, green fields, which we'll post on the website.(Sending photos with the market news turns out to be a bit of a headache sometimes!) [ed. See below]]
From Greenfields:
"With all the rain we have been getting the crops are growing nicely and the weeds aren't far behind. Once again we will be bringing lots of greens from our fields: new this week is our ever so tasty Green Summer Cabbage, Fernleaf Dill, Purslane (a great source of Omega3) and possibly the first of the Zucchini. As usual we'll have Red and Rainbow Chard, green and black Kale, Collards, Parsley, Green Onions, Broccoli, a limited amount of bunched Beets and lots of great looking Lettuce (Romaine, Red Leaf and Batavians).
From elsewhere in Ontario you'll find delicious new Potatoes at our table. We'll also be bringing lots more of those great Mangoes we had last week along with Oranges, Apples, Pears, Bananas and Avocado. For the next while you'll be able to meet various members of our farm crew at the market. This week look out for a familiar face: Mark!"
From Laura Sabourin of Feast of Fields:
"If the weather allows it, we will have raspberries, sweet cherries, maybe even a few sour cherries for those who have been asking (yes Niagara certified organic), some of the early apricots should be ready and Fresh Niagara Figs from my farm and my fig mentors. :-) For those who have never tasted a fresh Fig , these delicate beauties are a delicious treat very different from the dry/sulphured figs sold in grocery stores. They are very tender so for those interested please bring along a rigid plastic container (yogurt tub/tupperware) to carry them home in."
Between thunderstorms, holidays, and missing news, some of you may not have had a proper introduction to Peter Bzikot of Best Baa Farms. We are delighted to have him at the market with delicious local dairy products: Yogurt, Maple Yogurt, Fresh cheese, Feta, Ramembert, Brebettes, Eweda & Eweda Cru(of course all from Sheep milk)and also some Lamb Pies, frozen for an easy supper anytime. You can find Peter (or his helper Nicole) next to Beretta's along the path.
Come for the great groceries, bring the kids for stories at 4, and stay to enjoy dinner from market vendors or the park cooks and Dusk Dances at 7.
See you at the market!
Anne
