Hello Market Friends:
I can't wait to get more raspberries, more gorgeous flowers, more sweet peas, more ______(any number of possibilities could fill in this blank, it has been a great week of eating), and the first new potatoes. Bring along extra bags and baskets!
We'll have some fun activities for kids this week. Look for our friendly volunteers, Sadie and Nathalie, under a market tent in 'the valley'. Kids can hang around with them for a while, or take along something to do while shopping. We'll also have a visit from Environmental Defence.
Sosnickis' contribution: "We are digging New Potatoes this week!! Also an abundance of fresh cut Broccoli, bunches of Sweet Onions, Garlic & Scapes, big bunches of Beets with great tops, lots of Kale & Peas!" Jessie & Ben :)
Greenfields will be absent this week. Lorenz is very busy planting for fall and visiting farms in his work as an organic inspector. The Akiwenzies will also be absent; more bad luck with wind, algae in the nets, and this week, a van breakdown. It has been a frustrating summer so far, after a very long winter. We really hope things will get easier soon.
Plan B, Fun Guy Farms and Pine River Organic Farm (represented by Helga, Bob Felhazi's helper) will be back.
The Beretta Family is opening up their farm to your family. Please join us for a fun day on either Saturday, July 23 or Sunday, August 28 - 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. RSVP to thefarm@berettaorganics.com
Kids, come & see Sandy at the market to pick up your farm picture to colour!
Specials for July:
- Nitrite Free & Organic Beef Mini Burgers & Mini Chicken Hot Dogs
- Bone-in Chicken Breasts
ALSO check out the awesome "Everyday Flexitarian" Cookbook that Cynthia Beretta contributed to ($25.00 +hst)
This week's menu from The Organic Supper Club:
- Goji chia granola
- Quinoa salad with chipotle balsamic dressing
- Spicy Moroccan stew
- Kamut Swiss chard linguine
- Kale chips
- Sun dried tomato and parsley bean salad.
- Beet hummus
Don't forget to bring your kitchen knives and garden tools for expert sharpening by Denzil of Exact Edge.
ChocoSol will be 'up top' so they can make fresh tortillas to go with their chocolate and cold drinks.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
P.S. If you haven't seen the recent park newsletter, please read it here on the website. It's not just 'regular news'; the park's many special programs and the staff who run them are in trouble. As someone who moved to Toronto back when Dufferin Grove was a slightly scary, not very friendly zone, and then came back a few years later to find it a wonderful place to bring kids, make friends (and eventually to become a part of the market) I'm dismayed. Call your Councillor and tell them about all the kinds of value for tax dollars (and chocolate chip cookies) that come from the efforts of the good folks at the park.
