Hello Market Friends:
Salad days are here again. Whatever that means in the literary sense, it means delicious at Dufferin. Come check out all the varieties of lettuce and salad mix rolling in, and Ted's arugula too. Here's a very adaptable recipe to go with your favourite market greens. (As well as being really tasty, it also promotes good digestion.)
Dufferin Dressing
1 cup olive oil (from Angelos)
1/2 cup unpasteurized cider vinegar (Filsingers' is a fine local choice)
several cloves garlic (or plenty of Plan B's green garlic), chopped
1/4 to 1/2 cup raw honey, according to taste (from Ionel of Bees Universe)
a generous quantity of chopped fresh herbs (any or all of mint, chives, parsley, tarragon...from Underground Organics or Greenfields or your Urban Harvest herb plants)
salt and pepper
Blend well.
From the Sosnickis: "Ben will be bringing an abundance of our fresh Field Spinach, Green Leaf Lettuce, different kinds of dark, gorgeous Red Leaf Lettuce, Boston/Butterhead Lettuce and maybe some Romaine (a bit small yet, but I'm already making caesar salads!) and some young tender Kale along with bunches of Radishes. No more potatoes from us until our new ones begin; won't have to wait too, too long! Fields look good, crops are thriving. Second planting of sweet corn is in, tomatoes in etc, etc PLUS we are getting some baby pigs! With the 'melon & sweet corn' slop, how could we not raise some pigs? LOLOL! Oh, it's going to be fun this year! Log onto our blog at http://sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.com for recipes including 'Grape Spinach Greens Salad' and 'Spinach Bacon Salad' with news and pics as usual. I use 'market vendor' ingredients in my foods, so Angelos' olive oil & hard cheese, Forbes' syrup and the Dufferin bread are in this week's recipes. Enjoy." Jessie.
From Angelos: "I will be bringing some fresh baby field lettuce (assuming it is not raining so that I can pick in the morning). Also Linda will be bring a nice selection of heirloom tomato plants for the last time this year. After tomorrow, I may have a few tomato plants but no more good selection because we'll be planting the rest of them in the fields. Already planted about 3,000 plants so if Mother Nature cooperates, I will have a great selection of tomatoes at the market later on. Also more news from the farm, another of our Bronze Heritage Turkeys just hatched a new batch of babies so we are very excited that our rare breed turkeys are doing so well."
From Monika of Greenfields: Lots of tasty fresh Wild Mint for those weekend Mojitos! Lemon Balm, Oregano, and Tarragon, to name a few of our herbs that we'll have! Bright Rhubarb stalks, some of our Asparagus, our own Rutabagas and Sunchokes. Local Cucumbers, Salad Mix, Beets, and Parsnips. Great looking Green and Black Kales, Chard, and the return of Celery. I was up in the fields with a school group checking out all the transplants today- Kale, Collards, Japanese White Turnips, Mustard and Chard are all thriving and almost ready for their first harvest."
From Evelyne Gharibian of Hearty Catering: "Robin and I will be the market with Grilled Veggie Wraps. Looking forward to coming back!"
