Hello Market Friends:
We've had the lion part, and now it's the lovely lamb end of March. As they gear up for spring, lots of vendors have news:
From Kind Organics: “We will have the whole line up this week: arugula, spinach, kale, fire blend, Earth Blend (with flowers) or Spring salad blend, all the sprouts and of course some chickweed. We are also debuting a new fermented beverage this week: "Cosmic Lemon Water Kefir". We don't have a lot yet but we are so happy to introduce it at Dufferin Market.” Sandra Dombi
Colette from Urban Harvest writes: “We will be back with a full selection of seeds, seed potatoes and asparagus starts (second season). We have missed the market the last 2 weeks and our knowledgeable customers."
DeFloured will be away, but Chris and Krista promise it's only for one week!
For those craving gluten-free options, here's good news: Ali Harris is going to make us gluten free smoked fish fritters all season long, and they are terrific! His hemp pesto is also gluten-free, and no fridge is complete without it. Try it on pastas, pizza, brown rice, leftovers...just about any dish that needs a flavour boost.
From the Akiwenzies: “Well it isn’t blowing or snowing and all seems okay right now. If everything continues quietly on, we should be at Dufferin this week. See you then.” Remember your chequebook if you would like to sign up for a Community Supported Fishery full share ($225) or half share ($120), which will get you “Fishy Bucks” to buy wonderful smoked, fresh and/or frozen fish this spring.
Angelos of Country Meadows will bring a few frozen cuts of the heritage Berkshire pork he and Linda have raised, smoked hams, pork chops, and sausages. They have tried it themselves and report, “It is spectacular pork, so very tasty.”
Linda also writes, “I will send some nice fresh herbs for the "Easter Feast" to the market. We've had one of our smaller greenhouses going since Christmas so the traditional (as well as hardy) Easter herbs, mint, rosemary and oregano, will be arriving. My first children of the growing season leaving home!! I have had them outdoors a few times "hardening off" but when it comes to getting plants ready for the market, this spring is a far cry from last spring, a real test of endurance both for me and the plants. Nevertheless, the greenhouses are a "sea of green" so we are looking forward to a super growing season. Stay tuned for more spring stories.”
Woolerdale Organic Farm returns! Anne will have radishes, carrots, beets, shallots, and lovely spring branches.
This will be Blythe's last week at the market before she takes a short break to have her baby! Fill your pantry with jams and chutneys to keep you going in her absence, and try this great recipe using her apple butter. It was a big hit at our house.
No Sugar Needed Apple Butter Muffins
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Line 18 muffin tins with small paper baking cups or grease well. Combine all the dry ingredients with a whisk in a large bowl. In another bowl, combine all the wet ingredients and whisk well. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix well. Fold in chopped apple. Scoop batter into prepared muffin tins. Top with chopped nuts, if desired. Bake for about 25 minutes. Cool a bit before serving.
Hoping you enjoy very good meals in very good company this weekend.
See you at the market!
