Weekly Market Notes for November 27, 2014

Hello Market Friends:

Last week, Ionel/ John from Bees Universe came straight from a beekeepers' meeting to market, and he was looking pretty discouraged. He said many in attendance were talking about quitting, because they just can't afford to go on when they are losing so many bees. This week's announcement of Ontario's new restrictions on neonicotinoids may offer some hope, and not a moment too soon. There's talk in the business pages about many complaints from conventional farmers who have come to rely on these systemic chemicals, but it's time to find a better way, and great that our province is not waiting for others to take the lead.

Here's a news release from Sierra Club on neo-nics if you haven't heard about this until now: http://ontario.sierraclub.ca/en/node/6848

Back at Dufferin, you'll find Bees Universe outside this week so John can cook up some more 'mich' on the barbeque. You can buy them frozen to take home too. John will also have fresh eggs, and of course, honey!

When I wrote to ask how they fared in this week's crazy wind, Jenny Cook replied, "We only blew out one window in the garage, but I was sure we were going to lose our brand new greenhouse. Thank goodness it stood strong and now we know where to reinforce it!" Knuckle Down Farm will be back this week with loads of squash, carrots and sweet spinach along with a few other cold weather treats. Jenny may pop by with Baby Ernest, too!

I've had my first piece of Ali Harris's Black Cake for 2014, but it will not be my last! It's a moist, fruity, spicy delicacy which he only makes at this time of year. Don't miss it, this is food to make November not just dark, but delicious.

'Where are the bags I gave you last week!?!' is what Ted Thorpe yells at his favourite customers (with a grin). To rephrase that, please remember to bring along the bags you need --plus a few extra for our depleted bag-share box if you have some to spare.

Summer vendor Sas Long of Floralora is taking advantage of the milder weather this week to get 5,000 flower bulbs in the ground at her new farm in Prince Edward County. I know it's a bit soon to be looking forward to spring, but don't you love the thought of those early blooms coming in to market?

For the coming weeks we'll continue to have a hardy crew of vendors outside as well as in. You can bet that winter-long outsiders Krista and Chris of deFloured --and the rest of the gang under the big tents-- will be smiling even if it's nippy.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman
