Hello Market Friends:
You know what they say on TV: "Winter is Coming...." Well, don't believe everything you hear on TV, but nevertheless, my advice to you is to fill your arms and your cheeks with all the bountiful pleasures of the market right now, because although we've got a wonderful fall ahead, cooler, longer nights will slow down the avalanche of sweet cherry tomatoes and other heat-loving crops shockingly soon.
Floralora's gorgeous blooms won't be around forever, either, so don't put off treating yourself and your dear ones to lovely bouquets.
Looking at this point in the year from a different angle, for fans of vegetables that take a little longer to mature, this is the moment you've been waiting for. Stop by the Afri-Can Food Basket tables and you'll find okra, bitter melon, eggplants and much more.
Here are some impressive lists:
From Kyle at Everdale: "At market this week we have our super sweet carrots, celery, watermelon and green louobo winter radishes, greens, head lettuce, cherry tomatoes, onions both green and storage, cilantro, dill, parsley, basil and a sampling of winter squash that will be busting out of the fields here very soon. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for our Musque de Provence (Fairytale) squash which is amazing cooked, but is also traditionally eaten raw! Everdale is busy harvesting and getting ready for their annual Carrotfest! You're all welcome to join us at the farm on Sunday September 20 from 12-5pm for u-pick carrots, some fun activities for the kiddies, music and all around good times!" http://everdale.org/events/everdale-carrot-fest/
Sosnickis' contribution: "Our new Roma patch is kicking out more saucing tomatoes so come visit our booth if you still need to make sauce! Not taking any more orders, but if you come by earlier than later I'm sure we'll have some! More Apples!! More colourful Carrots! Sweet Corn!! Beets with fresh tops, Red Peppers, Sweet Onions, Red Onions, huge Swiss Chard, Kale, Potatoes (that Ben is digging as I write this!), Heirloom tomatoes still going strong too! Enjoy this amazing heat and harvest!" Jessie
Announcing the return of Beretta Farms organic hotdogs to the park snack menu! You'll also find an increase in the market-sourced ingredients in the soups and salads: small steps towards more local and organic focused eating. (This reminds me, have you seen Greenpeace's web project http://www.IKnowWhoGrewIt.org/ ? It's an idea-sharing site on food and farming, and worth a look.)
In other good news from the park, this week's oven repairs were remarkably successful, and the smaller oven has a new working surface inside. More details are posted here: http://www.publicbakeovens.ca/wiki/wiki.php?n=DufferinGrovePark.OvenRepairs#sept14repair
Jutta Mason says, "Now we know how to do it ourselves, and can pass it along. Each one teach one."
He's back! Jason Kun's Island Oysters joins us this week with his expert shucking knife and all the fixings.
In addition to all the seasonal flavours you could dream of, we'll have blues and accordion music, and plenty of good conversation, too.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
