Hello Market Friends:
There should be no trace of that white stuff left on the ground by setup time, and the spring excitement is building. Each week now, we will have announcements about returning vendors, early pickings, and products coming to the market that we've never had before!
The Urban Harvest greenhouse is full of green beauty, with many herbs and head-start vegetables growing by the day. Their wee violas (Johnny Jump-ups in my Mum's book) are the cheeriest sight, and I can't wait to see all the other plants they'll be bringing us as gardening season gets underway!
Here's a happy note from the gals of Earth & City:
"Hello Dufferin! We are thrilled to announce our return to the market this Thursday, April 17th. We've missed the wonderful community and look forward to a busy, exciting season ahead. We will be back with fan favourites such as the spring roll wrap, kale smoothies, various dips and flatbreads, and our delicious desserts. We have a whole host of new recipes ready - so stop by and see us each week to check out what's new!"
This Thursday will also mark the re-launch of ChocoSol tortillas at Dufferin, and you'll find chocolate bunnies (packaged with chocolate eggs) on their tables as well.
On Monday I received a chilling but thrilling email from Natasha Akiwenzie:
"The ice has broken up and has moved out as of 1pm today. We stood at the shore and took pictures of it as it left. It was amazing to watch and such a relief. It may not be gone permanently but it is definitely weakened and will melt faster. Now to get this season's plans into some kind of motion. Information about our CSF (Community Supported Fishery) is on our blog: akiwenziefish.blogspot.com.
You can also email akiwenziefish@gmail.com or call us for more information. Hope to see you sooner than later."
Did you know 'our' cheesemakers are famous? Well, Best Baa won FIRST PRIZE at the 2014 Canadian Cheese Awards in the 'firm' category for their Eweda Cru! That's in competition with all cow, sheep and goat's milk entries! Peter, who brings the load of Best Baa products to Dufferin each week, was too busy making yogurt to be able to attend the awards presentation, but luckily his mother Elisabeth Bzikot (who actually made the winning cheese) was in attendance. Congratulations!
From Country Meadows:“Well, old Man Winter left, and damn, his "Son of Winter" showed up, but quickly got the boot, so good riddance. My greenhouse is so crowded. I have some beautiful herbs needing new families so they can have more room to grow. These are all cold tolerant so are great for now, just in time to be part of that Easter Feast.” 'Linda
Ming from Ying Ying Soy apologizes, but likely has to miss this week's market.
There will be delicious sprouts and baby greens from Kind Organics, and maybe, just maybe, the first green goodies from Plan B's greenhouse. They'll bring us extra veggies to tide us over until more wild and farmed spring edibles arrive.
Here is the crew we expect:
Have a lovely long weekend, everyone!
