Weekly Market Notes for April 24, 2014

Hello Market Friends:

Earth Week, and every week, thank you to farmers who protect the Earth by growing organically, protecting soil and water and providing pollinator-friendly habitats. The future needs you!

From the size of Ben and Jessie Sosnicki's 'seedlings', you might think it was already summer! Jessie has posted lots of pictures and news on http://www.sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.ca/. So hard to wait for all the rest of our farmers to return, but so nice to see things underway on the farm!

Plan B will have the first bunches of home-grown green garlic and green onions! Yippee, one small step for spring, one giant step for winter-weary tastebuds!

Whether we have 'farms' the size of flower pots, tiny backyard 'ranches', or bigger habitats, this year we want to make Dufferin Grove THE place for everyone to get growing.

Adding to Urban Harvest's excellent range of open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds and plants, and Country Meadows Gardens' selection, this week, we are excited and delighted to welcome new vendors Crystal Bradford and Liam Kijewski of Wildlife Gardening. Here's a bit about them:

"We will have a selection of native perennials suitable for a variety of conditions including wetlands, woodlands, meadows, and prairies. Wildflowers, ferns, grasses, vines, shrubs, tree seedlings, and edible specimens will all be available. Wildlife Gardening is a full service landscaping and ecological restoration company with our native plant nursery being a major part of our operation. Co-owners Crystal Bradford and Liam Kijewski are passionate about the natural world and own an eco-arts business called Trash Theatre as well as organizing Kitchener Waterloo's annual earth day parade Procession of the Species Celebration." http://www.WildlifeGardening.ca/

Ali Harris and the Fish Shak team will be making lots of fresh and healthy juices and drinks to make you feel great.

Andrew Akiwenzie will be down, with frozen and possibly fresh fish, smoked fish, and something new, Rainbow Roe Caviar. Natasha let it slip that it is Andrew’s Birthday Thursday. ''He will be just younger than the big 50." Please join in wishing him a great year ahead!

  • Ali Harris (rotis and fritters, hemp pesto and seeds),
  • Akiwenzies Fish & More (fresh, frozen and smoked fish),
