Weekly Market Notes for August 27, 2015

Hello Market Friends:

Do you recall the fable of the grasshopper who plays while the hard-working ants spend summer preparing for cold, dark days ahead? At this point in August, I find it terribly tempting to pretend that the 'w' word doesn't exist, but calling out my inner ant has resulted in some tasty batches of oven-dried tomatoes, vegetable-rich sauces, frozen peaches and edamame to enjoy long after these abundant harvests days are past.

Kevin from Shared Harvest will be taking orders via email--for a limited time only--for Roma tomatoes by the case: <sharedharvestdunnville@gmail.com>, and the Sosnickis are accepting orders too, via their blog: www.sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.ca/2015/08/time-to-order-our-organic-sauce.html?m=1

Over the next few weeks, we'll be talking about the winter market at Dufferin, and possible changes ahead. Whether you are a market newbie or an old-timer, we're interested in gathering your views.

It IS still summer, though, so we'll have another visit from Lisa Paul of Ice Pop Art, Best Baa will bring more sheep's milk ice cream, and over at the Brixton Grill tent, Erica will be absent, but Jacob will do his best to bring some of her magnificent vegan ice cream and chocolate bon bons along. (If you haven't discovered them yet, they come in flavours so inspired we think Erica must spend her nights dreaming them up.)

Evelyn's Crackers will be absent again, so we're using their spot for Island Oysters (Jason Kun), with freshly shucked East Coasters!

From Forbes Wild Foods: "We'll have LOTS of chanterelles this week, some other wild mushrooms, and possibly some more wild blueberries."

The Ronwich

Ron is usually at market helping out Ted Thorpe, and making sure we don't take ourselves too seriously. One of Ron's favourite things to do is to cruise through the market with a park baguette, collecting ingredients for a fabulous sandwich. Ron's generous; he'll give you a bite, but he might not mention the layer of hot peppers inside. What's your favourite market creation?

Marvellous Edibles (located near Meaford) is having an Open House this weekend.

"Come check out the farm, visit the animals, the vegetables, take in the beautiful Niagara Escarpment and have some pizzas baked in our outdoor stone oven. See Jens for an invitation at our stand." Ayse

If you left a distinctive pouch at the fish table a while back, send me a description and we'll arrange to get it back to you.

There will be some special fun next week to mark the last week of school holidays.

I haven't even tried to list all the veggies now available, but the vendors' tables will be piled high.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman

P.S. Liz Martin and Paul Barber of Havelock Street invite you to drop by the grass south of the market for Scottish Country Dancing with music at 6:30 this Thursday: "There will be several audience-friendly dances you can join in, if so inclined. The formations are lovely, the dancers accomplished, and the music is toe-tapping great! (Not to mention the kilts ...)"
