Hello Market Friends:
Here come the high summer classics, the foods my Mother based every August meal around: corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cucmbers, new potatoes, green beans, and peaches. Heaven, and all the more so if you get produce as fresh as ours at the market. Load up, summer's all too short.
Here's the news from the vendors:
Sosnickis' contribution: "This week will be the beginning for Roma Tomatoes! For fresh eating in salads, eaten like an apple (like Ben does!) or for sauce the Viva Italias are an excellent flavourful tomato! By next week, we should have bulk for sauce. No rush, looks like a tomato year after all. Dare I say that blight is not a serious issue currently? Bite my tongue!! Also, Ben will be checking the corn tomorrow morn! We won't have a lot this week, but next week will be tons for everyone. We have succession planted the sweet corn, so it will be available well into September from us. Also coming, some field Cucs and a greenhouse type called 'flamingo organic' cucumber we are growing on strings! Very tasty. Summer Cabbages, Golden, Chioggia & Kestrel Beets, Green Beans, still rolling with our second Broccoli patch, big, sweet Candy Spanish Onions, Basil, Kale, and how could I forget fresh dug Spuds! (Oooo, the 'special' potatoes - blues, fingerlings, red gold are sizing up and coming soon too!). Don't forget our Garlic too. OH and the first picking of green Bell Peppers!! Hot Bananas too!" Park News Update:
Last Thursday, Ward 18 Councillor Bailao met with the City's recreation director about the changes being made at Dufferin Grove. Councillor Bailao has not followed up with the park since then. However the playground/wading-pool snack bar can no longer be staffed and will not be operating the rest of this week nor next. A simplified snack bar is operating out of the rink house for now. Staffing of both the farmers' market and Friday Night Supper is increasingly problematic. Ironically, the city's staffing costs have gone UP with all these changes.
Watching the dismantling of what has worked so far at Dufferin Grove is certainly interesting, but there has been talk throughout the park about possible ways to reduce the wreckage. We'll try to keep the dufferinpark.ca information page updated more often now, and we've begun publishing people's letters as well. For the market there is also a new updated bulletin board at the side of the wood storage shed in front of the garage. Anyone can post their notice. We've posted a reminder: "This problem is unrelated to Mayor Ford." (This is not a budget issue.)
As for contacting the Councillor -- it doesn't look like she's very interested in stepping up, but you may want to check with her office yourself: 416 392-7012, or e-mail her at councillor_bailao@toronto.ca.
Chapter Five of "the anomalies of Dufferin Grove" will be out in time for the market this week.
