Weekly Market Notes for December 21 & 28, 2006

Hello Market Friends:

We're looking forward to a very festive market, with wonderful foods of celebration for these longest nights of the year. Hope to see many of your friendly faces there!

Before we get to the market info. for this week, a couple of pieces of news from Jutta Mason:

First, Dufferin Park campfire cook Anna Bekerman is bringing some market food to our sister park, MacGregor Park (Lansdowne just north of College) for their wonderful solstice celebration, at 4 p.m. The festival is called "Burn the Snowman," and it includes music, stories, pageantry, and a campfire with delicious free food to celebrate the shortest day of the year. The festival is small and beautiful, and any market customers who want to leave their bags in the lockers at Dufferin and go check it out -- your food is safe with us.

Second: I went to the chefs' photo op at Queen's Park today, to see Jamie Kennedy, Michael Staedlander and others declare their support for dairy farmer Michael Schmidt. Mr.Schmidt brought one of his cows to milk right in front of the legislature. Then he ended his hunger strike, and his first solid food was a bit of Dufferin Grove oven bread, given to him by park friend Melanie Lemieux. From Jonathan Forbes:

"I'll be bringing a big assortment of wild fruits and veggies - great as stocking stuffers, wild mushrooms for stuffing the turkey and mountain cranberry(wild lingonberry). I'll also have 1 liter organic Maple Syrup on sale Xmas special at $18.00 plus some more fresh black walnuts and butternuts."

Andrew Akiwenzie will be coming with fresh and smoked fish.

Advance notice for December 28:

There won't be a market newsletter for the 28th, as I'm planning to ignore the computer for a while(and I hope you can, too) but there WILL be a market! Most of the vendors will be there, while some will be enjoying a well-deserved rest.

Here's the list of who will be away on the 28th(subject to change, of course):

Berettas', FunGuy Farms, Chocosol, Oh Soy

Forbes Wild Foods, Earthly Paradise and Whole World Trading will be taking longer breaks from the market, so stock up on the 21st.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday and a Very Happy New Year!

See you at the Solstice Market,

Anne
