Hello Market Friends:
My cousin just gave me a picture of a Valentine she came across, sent by my grandfather to his future bride nearly a century ago. As news of special treats came in from market vendors, I got wondering what was on the February 14th menu in southern Ontario, circa 1920. Any culinary historians out there?
(Many) decades later, when I ate at their table, my grandparents' meals were always hearty and delicious, relying on just the kind of good, basic ingredients our organic farmers bring us, and always enhanced by the tang of pickles (like Blythe's) and the aroma of fresh-baked bread. There was a lot of love in those meals. I'm sure these associations are one of the reasons I feel so happy bringing home bags of market food each week, but I also love our contemporary, innovative and multicultural flavours. My grandparents didn't get to eat many goodies like these:
"Earth + City is celebrating Valentine's Day this year with two special sweet menu offerings. We've made a strawberry cacao macaroon, purchased in packs of 3 for $6, with local strawberries we froze during the early summer months, as well as raw ground cacao from our friends at Chocosol. These would make a perfect little present for your sweetheart. We're also serving up our usual hot cider, but with a hint of fresh beet juice to colour it a festive red!" Jessica & Cassandra
De Floured's treats for Valentine's Day are flourless chocolate hearts with raspberry purée, baked caramel salted chocolate tarts, lemon tarts, and also there will be a maple custard flan with apples.
"We have our Valentine's Day special jam....Raspberry rhubarb orange jam! Nothing says I love you like jam (at least in our family!). As well, we have a gluten free cream of potato and leek soup. Perfect meal to cozy up to your sweetheart with." Spade & Spoon
Don't forget some ChocoSol CHOCOLATE, of course.
