Hello Market Friends:
Gung Hay Fat Choy! (Happy Lunar New Year!)
We don't have a parade planned, but we do have some good things to look forward to this week, notably the return of Colette Murphy with her seeds. This means that whether you have a nice patch of dirt or just a sunny windowsill, you're officially allowed to start dreaming of what spring could bring.
Here's news from a farmer who's thinking along these lines, too: The count down is on and I am ready to seed! Not for a good 3-4 weeks or so, but I shut the drapes so I don't see the ice outside and look back at our seeding records from last year and pepper seed were in soil by the end of February! Exciting stuff! Tomorrow, Ben and I will have our usual storage crops, and I will have vegetarian cabbage rolls again, back as well will be sauerkraut filled perogies and lots of regular too! I've posted recipes for "Sauerkraut Soup" and "Creamy Cabbage Soup" on our farm blog at: www.sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.com Jess & Ben.
In the New Year's Resolutions department, market regular Pamela Cuthbert recently returned from Scotland, and reports that she found examples in the UK of not only shops but whole towns that have stopped using plastic bags. We'd like to do better on this front at the market. We haven't wanted to impose something that's punitive towards new customers or the vendors, and we have been making progress; enough customers have started to bring their own carriers that some of the vendors have been able to stop giving out plastic. Can you help us push this farther? When you plan your trip to the market, please get in the habit of bringing along whatever you'll need to carry your purchases home, share any extra bags with a friend and help spread the word.
So far I haven't received any weather-related cancellations from our vendors, but if I hear anything in advance of market-time, I'll try to post info. as an addition to this news on the website.
See you at the market!
Anne
