Weekly Market Notes for January 20, 2011

Hello Market Friends:
Jessie Sosnicki has sent along some inspiration for your kitchen this week!

"To cure boring winter eating, I'm sending Ben packed with some frozen summer veg and will share a recipe now that is sooo good and such a great way to taste the summer of 2010! Ben will have frozen Sweet Corn, frozen Sweet Red Peppers (I have extra, I usually reserve these for the vegan cabbage rolls, but I have lots to share with the Dufferin crowd!), Sweet Potatoes and Onions, all needed for this fabulous recipe:

Winter Sweetie Soup:

2 onions, 1 pk Sweet Peppers, 1 pk Sweet Corn, 1 med Sweet Potato, Soup Stock, Fat of your choice is all you need!

First I put frozen peppers in pot with lid and heat fast to remove some of the excess water from the frozen peppers. In heavy bottom pot, combine chopped onion, slightly cooked pepper strips and a couple tablespoons of the fat of your choice. I use either butter or sunflower oil. Render down until both onions and peppers are soft and sweet! (I usually reserve some for bread and cheese!). Peel and chop your sweet potato and add to your pepper pot and cover with a soup stock of your choice. I use chicken stock. Cook until tender. Puree using a blender or food processor until smooth. Return to pot, heat and add thawed sweet corn and season to taste (I like to add diced frozen jalepeno and a dash of cayenne, salt and pepper). Heat until corn is hot in the soup. The neat thing about this soup is that the Sweet Potato does the thickening, so it has an amazing creamy texture without adding dairy!

Ben will also be packed with all the regular items: Perogies, Vegan Cabbage Rolls (Organic beef ones next week!), Sauerkraut, Frozen GREEN BEANS (we have lots of packs of frozen beans! Eat 'em up!!), Potatoes, Cabbages, Beets and we do have bins of sweet juice carrots, so he can bring some esp. for your juicing needs - let him know if you're interested! Have a great week! :)" Jessie & Ben

Beretta Specials for this week:

  • Pork Spareribs and Tenderloin
  • New York and Rib Eye Steaks

"Kind Organics will have their mix of micro-greens this week for flavouring soups and salads. We will have lots of Wheatgrass for those with juicers looking to detoxify a bit. We will also be selling seeds for sprouting your own sprouts, complete with sprouting instructions for novices. After much demand we will also be providing screens for prople to make their own mason jar sprouters. Also look for the new Kind Loose Tea Blend coming soon." Sandra and Tamas Dombi

From Lorenz at Greenfields: "This week will be our last for field grown kale. All roots are still in great abundance!"

If you arrive at the market and find the zamboni garage doors closed, don't panic. During these chilly weeks we'll be deciding based on temperature and wind whether to keep the big doors up or 'batten the hatches' and use the rinkside door to access the garage--BUT WE'LL BE OPEN FOR GOOD EATING AS USUAL!

See you at the market!
