Hello Market Friends:
Last week I visited 'The Windy City', aka 'The City of Really Heavy Doors' (see nickname 'A'). Chicago is a place of deep contrasts and divides, and that includes the cuisine; along with restaurants offering mega-mounds of deep-fried excess, I was delighted to discover that there are many making veggie-centric, delicious, inventive local dishes. I'll get back into the market test kitchen asap and see if I can re-construct some recipes for you!
Of course, my favourite ingredients are from our farmers, and some of the most amazing food of the year is just coming into season:
From Niagara Lavender Farm: "We have a wonderful load of precious apricots and raspberries for market tomorrow. The apricots are just delicious and so sweet." Debbie Wiecha
Sosnickis' contribution: "Hey all! When I spoke back in 2013 at the Canadian Organic Growers conference we met a couple film makers interested in learning more about us and filming our farm. This combined effort along with Millions Against Monsanto and many other awesome farmers, organizations and professionals came together and the documentary 'Of The Land' was created! You can view it online at https://www.fmtv.com/watch/of-the-land !!!! Pretty proud here. You meet my conventional dad, our awesome organic dairy neighbour Karl and will learn a lot about options when it comes to GMOs. It's a great time to eat and celebrate local and organic, as our offerings are getting pretty sweet! This week new: Carrots, Beets, Sweet Onions, Cucumbers, Heirloom Tomatoes, fresh dug Potatoes, Kale, Chard, Patty Pan Zucs and the Blossoms! Happy eating everyone!" Jess, Ben, Sadie & Nate
Lisa Paul will be visiting to introduce us to her tasty ice pops. Her website is http://icepopart.com.
Best Baa will be absent again, but definitely back next week. Say hi to Blythe's sister, Leah, behind the Spade & Spoon table, and welcome back to JK Fries, we hope!
We'll have a huge selection of high summer produce. Don't forget your baskets, bags, and buggies to bring it all home! Plenty of meals and snacks to enjoy on the spot first, too!
See you at the market!
