Hello Market Friends:
It has been a lovely week for me, as I've had the chance to visit a couple of our market farms, to sit in on an organic inspection at Greenfields, and to pick raspberries at Pine River. What can I say? Beautiful farms + expert growers = happy eaters well fed. Talk to Helga at the market if you'd like to go berry picking, and note Berettas' invitation to visit, too. Here's the news for another bountiful week:
It has been a great asparagus season, but as Bob Felhazi of Pine River Organic Farms cut the last harvest in preparation for Helga to bring to Dufferin he was ready to celebrate. All good things must come to an end! Don't miss out on his fingerling potatoes this week.
Laura Sabourin of Feast of Fields reports an abundant harvest: "Blueberries, blackberries, red and purple raspberries, maybe even some black and golden raspberries, mulberries, peaches, apricots, plums, figs, WOW we are going crazy picking and packing! Also a bit of my organic raspberry jam and great chilled apple cider and grape juice too."
Sosnickis' contribution: "Freeze, freeze your green beans! But don't worry if you can't as I've been busy Tuesdays 'preserving the seasons' to share with Dufferin this winter! Lots of Green Beans this week, lots of Tomatoes & Basil, lots of Zucchini, fresh dug Potatoes, big bunches of Sweet Onions, Cucumbers, Kale & Cabbage too! Sweet Corn is growing and looking awesome and Ben says we should be able to start harvest in two weeks time!" Jess & Ben
This weekend is Beretta Family Farm Day: Barn Doors are open from 11am -2pm on Sunday, July 25th. Admission and Lunch is free. Beretta burgers and hot dogs straight from the grill! There will be a Beretta Market set up selling our legendary ground beef, hot dogs, burgers, bacon and deli line up so you can take the experience home with you! Just remember to bring your cooler/insulated bags so your "experience" keeps its cool. Kids get to go horse back riding, egg collecting and get to milk a cow. If you hope to attend, call Shan at 416 674 5609 x228.
It's a great week to bring the kids along as we have a special visit from the Toronto Wildlife Centre: "Have you ever encountered a baby bird on the ground, and didn’t know whether you should intervene? Toronto Wildlife Centre's "Help Baby Birds" education campaign aims to raise awareness about the normal stages of development in birds, so that people know when to give babies a hand, and when to steer clear. We also want to introduce you to the birds in your neighbourhood! Stop by for some games and crafts, and take home a how-to-help guide and baby bird sticker." Erin Luther and Fiona Street of TWC
See you at the market!
