Weekly Market Notes for May 08, 2014

Hello Market Friends:

It is a busy and exciting time behind the scenes. We will have something new for you at the market every week now, as outdoor season vendors return, new ones join us, and our hardy crew of regulars adds fresh items to their spring tables.

Starting next week, you'll have the opportunity to sample and purchase local organic wines at Dufferin. We are participating in a pilot program welcoming VQA wineries to farmers' markets this year and next. There will be a rotating roster of several organic and biodynamic wine producers joining us, with one in attendance each Thursday, and we hope you'll really enjoy tasting and learning about many diverse wines made close to home. Quoting Hillary Dawson of the Wine Council of Ontario, 'what grows together goes together,' so here's to an ever-broadening range of complimentary local flavours at our market.

Helga of Pine River Organic Farm has great news: they will be coming with fresh spinach, wild leeks and carrots. When the early snow hit last fall, farmer Bob Felhazi was very disappointed that his late carrot planting was buried, but the deep snow stayed, allowing the crop to over-winter in the ground beautifully. Now we can enjoy the sweet result: local carrots in May! Please welcome Pine River's new helper, Matt, who is an organic farmer himself.

Urban Harvest will be bringing plants. Lots, hopefully but weather dependent of course.

Sandra from Kind Organics writes: "Thursday is Micro-Madness Day at the Dufferin Market. We will have micro-fire blend, micro-mustards, micro-cress, micro-Kale and salad blends with lots of micro additions in them."

The Akiwenzies will be down with fresh and smoked fish from Georgian Bay.

Once you get your groceries, stick around and enjoy tortillas, fritters, park soups, baking, smoothies and more. We'll have some swing music from acoustic guitarist Rob Costigan, and good conversation too.

Here are the vendors we expect:
