Weekly Market Notes for June 21, 2012

Hello Market Friends:

So, you don't need me to tell you it's summer now, but the calendar is a reminder that we're really just beginning this big season of food production, and with it comes delicious vendor news:

Matthew and Laura Sabourin of Feast of Fields will be back with sweet cherries, high bush blueberries, fragrant field grown roses and “maybe” wild blueberries and some raspberries.

From Debbie at Niagara Lavender Farm: "We will have raspberries and lavender for this Thursday, and might have a few cherries....will see you then."

Sosnickis' contribution: "We are harvesting the first of our big bunches of Kale! Lots of juicy, sweet Strawberries, smaller in size, but awesome flavor!! Next week our berries will really start to dwindle. Goes so fast!! Peas, peas! Lots of Sugar Snap edible pod and the shelling kind too! Lots of Lettuces, more Swiss Chard too. Cultivating, hoeing, irrigating as the crops continue to grow nicely on farm." Jess & Ben

Primeridge Pure will be absent while they catch up with the demand for their cheese. Don't worry, more cheese for us next week.

From Tim of Clement's Crepes: "This week our crępe du jour features fresh strawberries from Sosnickis' Farm (lightly sweetened with Stevia ~ a plant derived natural sweetener) and dark melting chocolate from ChocoSol....add a scoop of Best Baa's sheep milk ice cream, and a sprig of fresh mint from our herb garden ~ and say hello to Nirvana."

"Good news for lovers of wild foods as the elusive morels have finally made an appearance this year. These tasty delicacies have a (well earned) reputation for being extremely difficult to find for foraging and still worth the work. They will be accompanied at the table by the saltiest of vegetables, the Wild Sea Asparagus. Between the two and my usual assortment of forest foods I will be bringing a tasty table for picking over." from Seth of Forbes Wild Foods

"Knuckle Down has its first broccoli harvest! Anyone who can sing me a line from the song that inspired my farm's name gets a free floret. I will also have my spicy salad mix and some lovely lettuces for you." Jenny

On a different note, we have sad news from Andrew and Natasha:

"Akiwenzie's Fish has decided to close the business. We have met many of our challenges but the algae in our fishing area and the changing weather patterns have made our decision necessary. We thank you for your continued support and encouragement over the years."

The Akiwenzie family has been a wonderful part of our market, and it has been terribly frustrating to see them faced with so many difficulties. They have plans for a small food business serving their local community, as well as writing and speaking to share their knowledge and concern for the health of Georgian Bay waters. I know many of us shared a feeling of great good fortune every time we ate their exceptional fish, and are very grateful for the hard work they put into bringing it. We can't help hoping they may be back one day, and will try to help market friends stay in touch as this next chapter unfolds.

See you at the market!
