Weekly Market Notes for March 20, 2008

Hello Market Friends:

In case you're wondering when spring starts this year, the vernal equinox takes place at 5:58 a.m. on this week's market day, March 20th. Consider this your invitation to the first market of spring! So what if we have to wear our mittens, let's celebrate anyway. It's time to watch for the strong sunny days and cold nights needed for the maple sap to flow, in the hopes of a new crop of syrup soon. The farmers won't be out in the fields for quite some time yet, but finding out what they've got planned for the 2008 growing season is encouraging, and lots is happening under cover:

From Angelos: "Just checked through the greenhouses and found a few young fresh Rosemary plants to bring to the market, just the thing to go with the Easter lamb & what a way to celebrate the first day of spring. Also as you know we grow over 70 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, so based on customer feedback we've selected 20 varieties of the most popular tomatoes and will have the seeds at the market, as well as our own blend of certified organic seed starter (limited amount of the seed starter)."

Colette Murphy will be back from Canada Blooms with her great seed selection, too.

While the rink season has finished in Toronto, the skating is still very good up where the Akiwenzies live, so not a lot of fishing at the moment! From Natasha Akiwenzie: "I really doubt we will have fresh this week. We will have smoked but we really need to hope for warmer weather this week and the temperatures to stay above zero overnight."

There will be a fine selection of produce, meats and treats for the long weekend. Stock up on delicious Best Baa cheeses and yogurt, as Nicole and Peter will be away the following week.

See you at the market!
