Weekly Market Notes for November 30, 2006

Hello Market Friends:

Last week's surprisingly fine weather brought just about everyone out to market. That was wonderful, until things got really over-crowded indoors. This week, we'll try a slightly different arrangement, to reduce the lineup problems, and we'll keep tweaking it to make the setup the best we can. This may mean that you'll find one or two of your favourite vendors in different spots week to week, so if you think someone is missing, please ask in case you just haven't spotted them yet.

We need your assistance in making the winter arrangements work, too. When you have a lot of great food to haul home, jumbo strollers, bundle buggies and wagons are very handy, but they do take up a lot of room. Please, if you need to bring a "vehicle" along, leave it outside when that's possible, or try your very best not to block the flow of people through those bottlenecks in the rinkhouse. Nobody wishes to be grumpy about this; let's make it work.

Here's the news from the vendors:

From Greenfields:

"Can you believe it, Greenfields Farm has been producing top quality organic vegetables for 10 years. This year marks our tenth anniversary as a market garden. Next week I'll get Lorenz to send the news so he can share some of his experiences and wisdom. Some crops just keep on going with this mild weather; from Greenfields this week: Purple Cauliflower, Green Cabbage, Carrots (The Best!!), Celery Root, Collards, Kale, Radicchio, Black Radish, Rutabaga, Sunchokes and a great selection of Winter Squash. Also making the trip is a fantastic selection of Fruit and more! See you there," Mark.

From the Sosnickis:

"Ben and I harvested fresh TODAY (enjoying the last of this nice weather) lots of nice, sweet Carrots with tops, Beets with tops, a few pounds of our great tasting Spinach & Baby Leeks - THEY PACK A NICE spicy punch to any meal let me tell you! (we had our OCPP inspection and the inspector has suggested we lay straw down on this crop and over winter it! Good idea, early spring leeks. We'll see what happens. A first for everything!), Potatoes, Red & Green Cabbages in various sizes from our storage lot. No, actually the red cabbage was harvested fresh today from Ben. We still are NOT DONE gathering our cabbage from the fields! Our coolers will be filled with our Sweet Corn, Green Beans from this past season to keep the idea of eating local alive, along with our Saurkraut and Perogies - we'll have LOTS this week and hopefully won't run out for anyone. See you tomorrow, enjoy the warmth - we feel the cold coming around the corner!" Jessie & Ben.

From Country Meadows:

"The travel weary 'olive picker' is returning tomorrow and will be back at the market on Thursday Nov 30th. He said that this year the olive trees did not produce many olives. For customers wanting to fill their egg cartons, they should come to the market early." (Angelos will be in his usual corner of the rinkhouse.)

Evelyne of Hearty Catering will be set up outside. Here's a preview of her menu:

"I will be bringing some stuffed peppers this week along with the usual salads, stews and soups. The wraps will have the extra option of chicken or goat feta."

Deer Valley Farm will have a great selection of fresh venison this week. www.venison.ca

You'll find Alli's wonderful selection of breads in the market tents this time, and we expect the Akiwenzies will pay us a visit with their truly delicious smoked fish.

Chocosol and Jonathan Forbes will return next week.

See you at the market!

Anne

p.s. If you've ever been to the Waldorf Market up in Richmond Hill, you might have met Michael Schmidt, who delivers raw milk to cowshare owners. (Owning part of a goat or cow has been the only way non-farmers can get raw milk.) Last week there was a 7 and a half hour long raid on Michael Schmidt's farm by MNR officials, who confiscated equipment, milk, his computer hard drive, etc. You can learn more about the story and efforts(including a petition) on Michael's behalf at: http://glencoltonfarms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=2
