Weekly Market Notes for October 4, 2007

Hello Market Friends:

It's a week for gratitude, and not only for the long weekend ahead! First, a very big thank you to our generous chefs, who fed everyone at the Tasting Fair so well and so beautifully. Then, a round of applause for the park staff for all they do (even when nuit-blanche-sleep-deprived). We couldn't have the market without their strength. And of course, as we get ready to carry home the makings of delicious meals, it's a good time to express appreciation to the farmers. There isn't a one who hasn't had some real challenges through the long, dry summer of 2007. Thank you all. Here's some of what's coming:

From Greenfields:

Get ready for Thanksgiving goodness! The selection is sure to please for all your feasting needs. Nappa Cabbage should be a staple, since it's beautiful as a raw salad dish as well as sautéed or in soups (special price this week)! Savoy is ready just in time for making rolls, and Red and Green are delicious as always. Huge heads of fresh Endive and magenta Radicchio add a flavourful punch to fall salad. Fresh deep green Broccoli, vibrant Purple and Romanesco Cauliflower, and bright green melt-in-your-mouth Brussel Sprouts go well with Leeks and Rutabaga. There will be no shortage of Pie Pumpkins, Delicata, Acorn or Butternut Squash! Lots of onions to choose from for seasoning- Spanish, Red, Yellow, and Shallots. Tons of specialty items to spice up the table too: Fennel, Parsley Root, Celeriac and Daikon to name a few.

From the Sosnickis:

For everyone's Thanksgiving feast needs, we will be bringing lots of gold and red potatoes, fresh spinach, spicy mesclun mix, sweet corn, apples, green beans, beets, sweet red, yellow, white and cooking Onions; sweet red, green, purple peppers & hots too; cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, new patch of carrots and Swiss chard! Jess & Ben.

From Andrew and Natasha Akiwenzie:

We will be coming. Just won't have any fresh fish. We have been patient but the strong southerlies won't allow us out on the water. They had been calling for it all week but now I guess it is here.

Deer Valley Farm will have a great selection of cuts of fresh venison for the market this week and will also be offering something a little different for Thanksgiving. Consider serving their popular all venison breakfast sausages which make for a great Thanksgiving breakfast. Irene will be serving something hot for those hungry shoppers at the market this week too. Avoid disappointment by placing your special order at: order@venison.ca

Beretta specials this week: Smoked Pork Hocks, Spicy Italian Sausage and Grass Only Cutlets.

See you at the market!

Anne
