The Cob Courtyard in Winter

Welcome to Cob In The Park

updated January, 2008

Welcome to the website for the earthen courtyard wall project at Dufferin Grove Park! The project has four parts: the cob courtyard, which is primarily a food facility, the cob composting toilet facility (the bio-toilet), benches, and related activities in other parks.

In the past year we have been added a number of cob benches to the park, continued work on getting the bio-toilet project going, and launched some other activities. We're now working on documenting much of this activity in this website.

To learn about cob see About Cob.

The Cob Courtyard: A Food Facility

See the Our Cob Courtyard pages.

The cob courtyard, by the playground

The food facility has sinks, water, power, and a fireplace to support food service around the playground (it also has a semi-private baby change area). Besides using it, now we are deep in the process of reflecting and chronicling. To take a look at what we've compiled so far, check out About Cob, The Cob Courtyard, and Courtyard Construction 2005. They include our extensive picture gallery with images of the process from start to finish, this Wiki containing in-depth information about the project, and an archive of all the cob-related notices posted over the summer of 2005.

Also, you can see a final report of the summer construction project featuring a virtual tour of the wall, prepared by Georgie Donais. Read More >> (pdf file, 569KB).

The Cob Bio-toilet Project

See the Bio-toilet Project pages.

The only thing missing from the playground area now is a handy toilet. The composting toilet project, intended to rectify this situation, began summer 2006 with over $20,000 in donations. The hole has been dug, the wall building has begun, and the composting toilet (high tech) has arrived. A permit has been obtained, and creation will begin again in spring 2008. For details, see Composting Toilet Project. For details, see Composting Toilet Project.
