Weekly Market Notes for February 2, 2006

Dear market friends,

Jutta may get to bed a little earlier this market eve if the news successfully makes it from my computer to all of yours, though it's more likely she'll be too busy working on the current rink concerns. I'll be doing my best to keep you filled in on what's coming to the market, and still relying on her for regular bulletins. Nobody could take Jutta's place for up-to-the-minute news from the park! Thanks to Henrik Bechmann, our webmaster, for his good-natured technical assistance this week.

It's continuing to be a great season at the market, and there's lots of news from vendors this week. The headliner is from Country Meadows:

I just got word my olive oil has arrived in Toronto, so tomorrow on my way to the market I will stop by the warehouse and take enough to fill my oil canister. Tomorrow I will have oil only for the customers to fill their own bottles. I will not have any prefilled bottles tomorrow because of time restrictions. The prefilled bottles will be available next Thursday, Feb 9th.

Angelos

We'll be happy to see Colette Murphy of Earthly Paradise back this week with her wonderful body care products and maybe just a wee sampling of seeds to get the gardeners thinking about their spring dreams. Michael Sacco's chocolates and solar-roasted peanuts have been so popular that this will be his last week until he brings more cacao back from Oaxaca. He'll be out by the garage this time, with hot amaranth drink as well. If you're waiting for a new supply of dried mushrooms or other wild foods, hang on until next week, when Jonathan Forbes will be paying us a visit.

From Beretta's:

"Hello Everyone, I will be sampling "Gelatina Di Maiale" (made with pork products) on February 2nd. It will be sold in sections at $8.00/lb. See you on Thursday", Mary Lou

From Irene of Deer Valley Farm:

"A full selection of fresh venison cuts available at the market this week including: tenderloin, striploin, top sirloin, sirloin tip roasts, inside/outside & eye of round, stewing & only just frozen ground as well. As always, we have burger patties (1/4 lb. x 4/pk) & breakfast sausages also. If you're hungry while at the market...come see what's inside the crock pot."

On the market news board outside the rinkhouse kitchen, you'll find a job ad from Lorenz Eppinger of Greenfields that he's asked us to circulate. It's for Mark's job as Retail Manager. We'll be sorry not to have him at the market, but Mark will be busy learning more about the fieldwork side of the business at Greenfields this year.

And finally, attached is the announcement for a Slow Food event on February 20th, a forum on local eating that will include Plan B, Urban Harvest, and our market as well as Karma Co-op, Supersprouts and Henry of Pelham Winery. It's also a dinner, with a menu featuring foods from the Sosnickis, FunGuy Farms, the Slegers, and others, so the evening should be both informative and delicious.

See you at the market!

Jutta

P.s. friends of the rink, you'd better read the newsletter editorial "The Upside Down World of City Rinks" www.dufferinpark.ca/editor -- the Health & Safety folks are back again and maybe it's time to rescue outdoor rinks, under a board of management?
